Truven Names Top U.S. Hospitals
Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Truven Analytics has released its list of the top 100 hospitals in the United States, with the majority of the large teaching facilities based in the Midwest.
The list, formerly known as the Thomson Reuters Top 100 Hospitals in America, included 32 hospitals in the Midwest.
The hospitals are evaluated in 10 areas, including mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average patient stay, expenses, and patient satisfaction, among other categories. They are also evaluated for the treatment of conditions such as pneumonia and heart attacks.
Publicly available information on more than 2,900 hospitals nationwide is evaluated to create the list. They include Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, andcore measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Comparewebsite.
Of the 15 major teaching hospitals on the list, nine were in the Midwest. They included three Advocate Health facilities in the Chicago area, the NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, Ill. and the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Ill. made the list among large community hospitals, while Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville, Mich. and Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital & Clinics in Prairie du Sac, Wis. were among the small community hospitals that made the list.
According to Truven Senior Vice President Jean Chenoweth, “The winners of the 100 Top Hospitals award have driven the national benchmarks higherevery year for 20 years. These leaders continue to demonstrate their visionof excellence when it comes to adopting new technologies and techniques.”
According to Truven, if all the hospitals nationwide adopted the same level of quality as the hospitals on its list for just its Medicare patients, the average patient stay would decrease by half a day, 82,000 patients would be free of complications, and more than $6 billion a year in savings would be realized.
