When Kansans think about their Medicaid system, they might have someone like Jessica Corado of Pittsburg, Kansas, in mind. She was working as a waitress, without health insurance, when she found out she was pregnant. \"I was 17, and you know Medicaid really helped me, because I felt like I had no other way of paying for my care, and paying for all these hospital bills.\" Her daughter, Kimberly, is four years old now. Aside from a dental surgery, check-ups and preventive care, she doesn’t have many medical needs. And she’s staying healthy.
CDPH Penalizes Seven Hospitals $775K Free

The California Department of Public Health on Wednesday levied 10 penalties against seven hospitals for medical errors that killed or gravely endangered patients in 2011. A department official also disclosed that the rate of adverse events in California\'s hospitals has yet to stabilize – the first step in their moving toward a consistent downward trend.

Group Calls For Physician Reforms Free

The Santa Monica-based advocacy group Consumer Watchdog has called for random drug testing of physicians and several other reforms in the wake of published reports linking dozens of California doctors to the drug overdoses of their patients. Consumer Watchdog wrote Gov. Jerry Brown and the chairs of the Assembly and Senate business and professions committees in the wake of a recent multi-part investigation by the Los Angeles Times into physicians who may have been prescribing medications without heeding potential patient harm. The newspaper was able to link 91 doctors to at least three patients each who died of prescription drug overdoses.

Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente\'s multi-million dollar investment in curbing obesity is bearing some positive results. According to a recently published study in the American Journal of Evaluation, Kaiser\'s community-based investments in encouraging school-age children in Northern California to participate in more physical activity has led to at least 20% of those populations reaching the targets set by the initiatives in four out of the nine programs examined.

New polling by a wing of the American Cancer Society concluded that voters in two Midwest states want Medicaid coverage to be expanded under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The polls, which were undertaken by the firms Lake Research Partners and GS Strategy Group – the former is Democratic leaning, the latter Republican – indicated that both Iowa and Michigan voters desire Medicaid expansion by a wide margin.

The Walgreen retail clinic subsidiary Take Care Health Systems has entered into an agreement with the Community Health Network to expand the amount of care available to the latter\'s members in Indiana. Under the agreement, Community Health\'s patients will be able to have greater access to Take Care\'s clinics via expanded hours; Take Care\'s nurse practitioners will be able to communicate more easily with Community Health\'s physicians; and there will be an overall improvement in the coordination of care between the two providers.
Mishap-Related Deaths Rise At Minnesota Hospitals Premium Content

Despite efforts to reduce the fallout from serious adverse events that occur in Minnesota\'s hospitals, the latest reporting from state regulators indicate the mortality rate from such mishaps are on the rise. Altogether, there were 314 adverse events in Minnesota\'s hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers during the last fiscal year, which ended on Oct. 6, according to data compiled by the Adverse Health Care Events Reporting System, which is operated by the state Department of Health.

Kaiser Permanente researchers have tied HIV-positive patients to a much higher incidence of non-melanoma skin cancers. According to a study of data of some 43,560 Kaiser Permanente enrollees between 1996 and 2008, those who were HIV-positive had a 2.1 times greater risk for developing basal cell carcinomas and a 2.6 times greater risk for developing squamous cell carcinomas.

Hospitalists Say They\'re Overloaded Free

Nearly 40% of hospital-based general practitioners who are responsible for overseeing patients’ care say they juggle unsafe patient workloads at least once a week, according to a study published Monday as a research letter in JAMA Internal Medicine. In the study, researchers at Johns Hopkins University invited nearly 900 attending physicians, known as hospitalists, to complete an online survey that measured various characteristics, including the number of patients they thought they could manage safely during a typical shift. Hospitalists are the physicians who coordinate a patient’s care and medications among various specialists while they’re in the hospital and oversee their transition home.

More than one in five non-profit hospital chief executive officers in California received compensation totaling $1 million or more in 2010, according to a new pay survey by Payers & Providers. Altogether, 32 CEOs of the 154 surveyed received pay packages that ventured into the seven figures. That compares to 19 CEOs who received seven-figure pay packages in the only prior survey Payers & Providers conducted. That survey was published in June 2010, and relied primarily on data from 2007 and 2008.
