In Brief: Cedars-Sinai Receives $20 Million Gift; ACA Trends More Favorably
Cedars-Sinai Receives $20 Million Gift
The founder of a leading Southern California financial management firm and his wife have made a $20 million grant to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to facilitate the merging of biomedical research and clinical care.
The 50,000-square-foot surgical and interventional center at Cedars-Sinai’s advanced health sciences pavilion will be named after Bill Gross and Sue Gross, who made the gift. Bill Gross is a founder of Orange County-based PIMCO. The gift was made through the Gross Family Foundation.
“We wanted to make a gift to support a worthy Los Angeles–based healthcare institution. Cedars-Sinai's mission resonated with us,” said Sue Gross, who president of the Gross Family Foundation. “We, too, share Cedars-Sinai's passion for quality patient care, research, teaching, education and service to the community. The new pavilion will be a place that harmonizes all of those things, and we wanted to be a part of it.”
The new 11-story pavilion, which looms over La Cienega Boulevard and has been under construction for several years, is expected to open in mid-2013. In addition to the surgical services, it will also house the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute.
ACA Gains More Favor
A new poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation has concluded that the public’s attitude toward the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has become slightly more favorable since last week’s presidential election.
According to the survey of 1,223 individuals, 43% viewed it favorably, and 39% viewed it unfavorably. However, only a third of respondents said they wanted to repeal the ACA, the lowest number ever, while nearly half said they wanted to expand the scope of the law.
